Blockchain technologies have attracted the attention of many scholars, managers, and professionals in different sectors from around the world. It is a highly disruptive technology that is already revolutionizing organizations and their supply chain business models.
Despite many innovations concerning supply chain operations and management (OSCM), blockchain applications are still at the beginning of its way in this field. At the moment, little is known about the blockchain role in operations’ traceability and in such sectors as e-commerce, agriculture, public services, etc.
Therefore, this article seeks to extend our understanding of blockchain applications in OSCM and how companies create and acquire business value with blockchain technology. The article proceeds with an extensive analysis of the technological background which surrounds the blockchain, investigating various issues related to its use and development in the industrial and application field.
